A bright, clear afternoon greeted the riders for the Individual Time Trial at Empire Vale. In typical South Ballina fashion however, the breeze sprang up mere minutes before the racing was due to start. This gave the riders a bit of a push on the way to Wardell but would prove challenging on the return leg/s and those with TT bikes, skinsuits, aero helmets and clip-on bars were at a distinct advantage.
12 Riders made the start, representing 3 Grades, B, D & E and were set off in reverse order at 1 minute intervals, with E setting off first and completing 1 Lap, while the other grades were to do 2. Paul O’Kelly led Kevin Durkin in E grade and that was how they finished with Paul extending his lead by 49 seconds to finish in 24:00 (30.499kph avg.). D grade had 7 starters – Bruce Quinn, Mark Downey, Belinda Caldwell, Brent McGeary, Gavin Rose, new member Mark Thompson and David Cowdery. Gavin showed his TT prowess to finished 1st in a time of 44:34 (32.85kph avg.) 2:14 ahead of his nearest rival Bruce 46:48. Mark Thompson put in a solid effort to place third in 47:23. In B grade there were 3 starters, Phil Cook, Ritchie Duncan (BBCC) and Christian Saurine (D/Lic.) Christian was too quick on the day despite averaging 40 watts (!) less than Ritchie. Christian’s time was 38:05 (38.44kph avg.) with Ritchie finishing in 38:48 with Phil rounding out the field with a very solid 41:29.
A full post mortem was undertaken at Hotel Henry Rous afterwards with the pub providing the pizzas as the riders and officials lubricated their throats. A big thanks to all the volunteers and also to Workforce International for their on-going support with the Signage.
